What is EMDR?

An evidence-based path to healing

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy recognized by leading organizations, including the American Psychological Association (APA) and the World Health Organization (WHO), that helps the brain process distressing experiences so they no longer feel as overwhelming or emotionally charged.

EMDR is a gentle and relatively nonverbal approach, and unlike many other forms of talk therapy, it taps into the brain's natural mechanisms for healing. For many people who've spent years in treatment trying to manage stress, anxiety, relational issues, and low self-esteem, EMDR is the first intervention that has truly offered them long-term relief.

What to Expect

What to expect during EMDR therapy

EMDR therapy begins with taking the time to understand your history, current concerns, and what you hope to achieve in therapy. The first sessions focus on helping you feel prepared by building coping skills and strategies to manage distress, so you feel grounded and supported before working with difficult memories.

When you're ready, you'll be invited to focus on a specific memory or experience. Together, we'll identify the images, thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations connected to that memory, as well as a more adaptive belief you'd like to develop.

As you focus on the memory, I'll guide you through sets of bilateral stimulation using eye movements, alternating taps, or sounds. After each set, you'll simply notice whatever comes to mind. As the brain processes the experience, many people notice shifts in emotions, body sensations, thoughts, or new perspectives, allowing the memory to become less emotionally distressing.

Healing doesn't happen all at once. We'll move at a pace that feels right for you, making sure you feel supported, safe, and in control throughout every step of the process.

Common Questions

Wondering how EMDR works?

These are questions people often ask before starting EMDR.

EMDR helps the brain reprocess memories that may feel “stuck.” Rather than erasing memories, EMDR reduces the emotional distress associated with them, allowing you to remember what happened without feeling overwhelmed by it. Over time, many people notice new perspectives, greater emotional balance, and a stronger sense of resilience.

No. One of the unique aspects of EMDR is that healing does not require describing your experiences in detail. You remain in control of how much you share.

It varies. Some people notice meaningful change working on a single distressing experience in a few sessions, while more complex histories benefit from longer treatment. We'll review progress together regularly.

Yes. EMDR can work with feelings, body sensations, and fragments of memory — a clear, complete narrative is not required for processing to occur.

Most people describe it as intense but manageable. You stay awake, aware, and in control throughout, and we build grounding skills beforehand so you always have ways to steady yourself.
