Understanding Depression

Depression can look different from person to person

Sometimes it feels like persistent sadness, but often it shows up as emotional exhaustion, self-criticism, disconnection, difficulty finding motivation, or a sense that you're simply moving through life without feeling fully present in it.

Depression isn't always experienced as sadness. It may feel more like irritability, emotional numbness, hopelessness, exhaustion, or feeling stuck despite doing everything you can to keep moving forward. Because it looks different for everyone, it can sometimes be difficult to recognize.

While an online screening cannot provide a diagnosis, it can be a helpful first step. If you suspect you may be experiencing depression, reaching out to a licensed mental health professional can help you better understand what you're going through and explore the support that's right for you.

Recognizing It

Depression often looks like the following

Activities, relationships, and goals that once felt meaningful may no longer bring the same sense of enjoyment or fulfillment.

Feeling drained even after rest, where everyday tasks — getting up, answering messages, making decisions — require far more energy than they used to.

A harsh inner voice that magnifies mistakes, minimizes accomplishments, and tells you that you're not enough — no matter the evidence.

Depression doesn't always look sad. It can surface as a short fuse, frustration with yourself and others, or the sense of being trapped in place while life moves on.

A sense that things won't get better, paired with feeling distant from the people and activities that once made life feel meaningful.

How Therapy Can Help

What can therapy help with?

Living with depression can feel overwhelming, and it's common to wonder whether what you're experiencing is “serious enough” to seek help. If depression is affecting your relationships, work, daily responsibilities, or your ability to enjoy life, therapy can provide a safe and supportive space to better understand what you're going through.

Together, we'll explore the thoughts, emotions, experiences, and patterns that may be contributing to your depression. Using evidence-based approaches tailored to your needs — including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), psychodynamic therapy, EMDR, and attachment-based interventions — we'll work toward meaningful and lasting change.

  • Feeling more connected to yourself and others
  • Having more energy and motivation
  • Finding joy in everyday life again
  • Improving mood and emotional well-being
  • Reducing self-criticism and negative thoughts
  • Building confidence and self-esteem
  • Learning practical tools to manage difficult emotions
